Here is an interesting article in LA Times about how puberty seems to hit young girls at an earlier age, because of the environment and/or obesity. To me it just doesn't seem right that an eight year old develops breasts and starts her period. Girls are still playing with dolls at that age! 
I mean... who needs unwanted male attention at THAT age? The fact that they may seem far older than they are puts them at risk of rape and other nasty stuff that they don't yet understand how to protect themselves from.
