I have no idea really, but more of me thinks 'no' to the whole thing.

I am with the 2/3's of the world that believes in it! Only modern day Christianity doesn't believe in reincarnation. Everyone else, including Native American Indians do. Even what I've studied of ancient Christianity believes in it.

It's a beautiful thought though... I mean everything else in nature is cyclic.

Thats probly closer to the reality of it, i.e. it's an as yet misunderstood cyclical process but i really don't think it's literally any given "individual" person recycling - it's simpler than that, much simpler imo.
That people at times "remember" things, events or other souls they've encountered before is probably because of some kind of vibrational resonance they feel with deeply underlying currents that are steering their lives for the time being but aren't necessarily all the time present.
What fascinates me is meeting another with whom there may in fact be developing a long range association that spans many lifetimes, the details of which are mostly and forever forgotton, but the fact of association may itself become clear and overpowering once two such people meet and get to know each other in this life on Earth.
To go deeper than a sense of "recognition" that is vaague oreven hauntingly familiar, probably requires that they fall in love , because it is only at the greater depths of penetration into reality afforded by the love shared between two people, that such a study can be made.
