Cartoons worth dying for?

What's your personal opinion on the recent trouble over the Danish cartoons of Mohammed that has caused islamics to set fire to scandinavian embassy buildings and demonstrate against european freedom of speech?

The demonstrators were protesting against caricatures of Islam's Prophet Mohammed that were first published in a Danish newspaper several months ago.

The cartoons, first printed in Denmark and then published elsewhere in Europe, have touched a raw nerve in the Arab and Islamic world because Islamic law forbids any depiction of Mohammed, favorable or otherwise.

Rage against caricatures of Islam's prophet poured out across the Muslim world on Saturday, with aggrieved believers calling for the execution of those involved, storming European buildings, and setting European flags and embassy buildings on fire.

My opinion is this;
Any religion or belief that cannot be debated, criticised or questioned is not worth considering in the first place. I am not religious, but if God exists he has humour. Just look at the way he created George Bush for us to laugh at! I am one of those people who can joke about almost anything. Including God.

If a religion can't handle being introduced to a modern liberal society, then how can they claim to have a strong religion? I'm not convinced by this "Allah is a god of peace, and if you disagree we'll jihad your ass" talk... After all, our cartoons of Mohammed are nothing compared to suicide bombings, terrorism and preaching that all jews and christians must die.

I believe in freedom of speech, freedom of thought, freedom of artistic expression. Why should we be intimidated by narrowmindedness?

The thing is... If I would say in public that I think Jesus was a c**ksucking idiot, I wouldn't get a fatwa put on me. People have been making jokes and cartoons about Jesus for years!

It's all about democracy and respecting the fact that everybody doesn't share my beliefs.

I Totally agree with you Bobinbed, for a religion that preaches peace it is the most violent group out there.

Bugger it, why not give them SS uniforms and call their leader Hitler! It amounts to pretty much the same! (especially for the Jews)

And what do you mean it wouldn't be possible to run Christ cartoons in the west because the media outlets would censor it? Only in America or the catholic countries. Here in Scandinavia it wouldn't be a problem at all. We are not very religious people you see.

The short answer is that no one benefits or gains from war in the long term. Religion is known to be the cause of 99% of all known wars (maybe we should bathe in Domestos?) so get rid of the priests etc and the world can live in harmony? Man as a species is a competitive creature so requires a conflict or two to keep the natural rythme of life going. Violence is in our nature.

If we had world peace then it stands to reason that we would find something else to fight other than each other, maybe some creature from another planet?

We are what we are and there is no getting away from it, if the Muslims didn't bomb London then it may have been the IRA. They caused more death and destruction than the Muslims and they never killed themselves (much) in the process. The Uk (and others) have suffered enough of this type of thing to get over it and continue as normal. The people who are Terrorists are just idiots who can't argue properly anyway and see violence as the one and only answer.

I have often wondered why the Islamic people don't see how contradictary there own religion is. Don't tell me that they are all stupid! I was raised being brainwashed in a Mormon family, and still had enough sense to see how stupid that religion is! Where are the intelligent Muslims to protest the violence that so many Muslims believe in?

I find the whole discussion interesting/subject,its a persons religion period.Who am I or you to say anything yet,there`s a point where when violence is involved the whole idea of any religion goes out the door.Just a thought.

I wish i had time to wash my car, let alone protest something.
I would love to protest the idiots who protest anything just to get attention.
I have an idea, get a job, and create something positive in your life instead of just complaining all the time.
The protests have spread to here in the U.S.
They had 1,000+ morons protesting at the Constitution Center in Philadelphia yesterday.
I feel bad for Joe Schmoe who saved all year to go on vacation, and than he had to deal with "protestors " blocking a national landmark.
Than there are the "God-fearing right-to-lifers" who have no problem pulling thier kids out of school to go protest abortion rights in Washington D.C.
And they are all smiles on the front page of the paper, while thier kids are missing out on school.

I agree Gregdam. But, I myself would protest against the war if I knew how. I think this may be the beginning of World War III myself, and am not too happy about that prospect.
