NEW YORK – Imagine, John Lennon makes a television commercial for charity -- 28 years after his death.

Through the use of digital technology, the former Beatle urges people across the United States to support a campaign by "One Laptop per Child" to deliver tough, solar-powered XO laptop computers to the world's poorest children.

"Imagine every child no matter where in the world they were could access a universe of knowledge. They would have a chance to learn, to dream, to achieve anything they want," a voice and video image of Lennon has been created to say.

"I tried to do it through my music, but now you can do it in a very different way. You can give a child a laptop and more than imagine, you can change the world," says the musician in a play on one his best known songs -- 1971's "Imagine."

Lennon was shot and killed as he and his wife, Yoko Ono, arrived at their Manhattan apartment building on December 8, 1980.

Ono approved the "One Laptop per Child" commercial, which was launched on Thursday and will be shown on donated broadcast and cable time. It can also be seen at www.youtube.com/olpc.

The "One Laptop per Child" Foundation, created in 2005, is a spinoff from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and started producing the XO laptop late last year at a manufacturing cost per machine of less than $200.



So what do you think of the ad,the use of Lennon or the importance of the campaign.Or how the donations should be spent,for me I understand the meaning of the campaign in a perfect world it would be great to give every child a laptop,but how about stopping the wars/poverty/famine/killings etc.Then lets think of laptops.Oh and what did you think of the guys yellow submarine voice for lennon.

Well perhaps if all children in the world were given an education, there would be an end to at least poverty, famine and crime. There will always be war.

I think it's ok to use Lennon's voice for the campaign. He would probably have agreed to it if he was alive.

Hi bobin,

I agree education is the major key but giving laptops,heck most of the children don`t have schools even teachers.War will go on,but until governments step up and stop these gangs stealing many of the supplies,famine/poverty will go on.Many of the supplies are gone before the poor get it,I would rather have a barrel of rice than a laptop
That`s what I meant (your boxed area).(dealing with very poor Africa)

But when I 1st read it I just thought very poor and my mind went to Africa,not anywhere else.
Now that was my 1st thinking when I read the campaign,watching it again,ya,,
It would be great to give every child in this world a laptop,give every child an education,not just in Africa but everywhere,poor is poor.In Canada or the USA or any country there are so many poor family`s and children that need this.

The campaign is a nice thought,using Lennon will give it some little light.
